As the temperatures drop, it’s crucial to make sure outdoor cats are prepared for the winter months. These resilient felines still need our help to stay safe, warm, and comfortable during the harsh weather. Here’s how you can make a difference in their lives:
How to Build the Perfect Winter Shelter:
1️⃣ Size Matters:
- Keep the shelter small and snug—big enough for the cat to move around but small enough to retain body heat. A space about 18″ x 18″ x 24″ is perfect for one or two cats.
2️⃣ Insulation is Key:
- Line the walls and floor with foam insulation, straw, or mylar blankets to trap heat. Avoid hay, as it can retain moisture and make the shelter damp.
3️⃣ Keep it Off the Ground:
- Raise the shelter off the cold ground by placing it on bricks, wooden pallets, or a sturdy platform to block wind and prevent flooding.
4️⃣ Weatherproof the Shelter:
- Use materials like plastic storage bins, wood, or heavy-duty Styrofoam coolers for the structure. Cover with a tarp or garbage bags to make it waterproof.
5️⃣ Proper Entryway:
- Make a small, round entrance (about 6-8 inches in diameter). Add a flap or curtain to shield from the wind, but make sure it’s easy for the cats to push through.
6️⃣ Fresh Bedding:
- Use straw, not blankets! Straw stays dry and warm, whereas blankets absorb moisture and can freeze.
What NOT to Do:
🚫 Do not use towels or blankets inside the shelter—they can trap moisture, making the shelter cold and uncomfortable.
🚫 Avoid placing food or water inside the shelter. Spills can freeze and make the space unusable. Place food and water dishes outside, a safe distance from the shelter, and use heated bowls if possible.
🚫 Don’t use harmful chemicals or repellents near your shelter. They can harm the cats and deter them from using the safe space you’ve provided.
Why It Matters:
Outdoor cats are part of our community, and simple efforts can mean the difference between life and death during the winter months. If you’re unable to create a shelter yourself, consider donating materials to or volunteering with groups like DCS Feline Fixers, who are dedicated to helping our feline friends thrive year-round.
Together, we can make sure no cat is left out in the cold this winter. 🐾💙
