Thank you for taking this step to create a happy home for your new cat!

Adopting a cat is a beautiful act of love, but it’s important to remember that adjusting to a new home takes time. The 3-3-3 Rule is a simple guide to understanding your new feline friend’s transition period and helping them feel safe and loved.

The Rule Explained:

3 Days:
Your cat is likely overwhelmed. They may hide, refuse to eat, or seem distant. This is normal! Everything is new, and they’re trying to process their surroundings. Give them a quiet, safe space, fresh food, water, and lots of patience.

3 Weeks:
By now, your cat should start to feel more comfortable. They may begin exploring more, showing their personality, and establishing routines. Trust is building, but they may still be cautious about some things.

3 Months:
At this point, your cat should feel fully at home. You’ll likely see their true personality shine, and they’ll have settled into life with you as part of the family.

Why This Rule Matters:

Sadly, despite understanding this rule, some adopters become frustrated and return their cats before these milestones are reached. This is heartbreaking for the cat, the adopters, and for us at DCS Feline Fixers.

When a cat is returned, it disrupts their journey to finding a forever home. We understand that life circumstances change, but patience and compassion during this adjustment period are key to success.

Adopting a New Cat? Here’s What You Need to Know About the 3-3-3 Rule—Especially in Multi-Cat Homes!

3 Days:
For your new cat: Overwhelmed. They may hide, hiss, or seem uninterested in engaging. This is their way of processing a totally new environment.
For your resident cat: They may feel territorial or confused. Your existing pet will notice the newcomer and could react with hissing, swatting, or hiding.

3 Weeks:
For your new cat: Starting to feel more confident and exploring their surroundings. You might notice them testing boundaries and becoming curious about their new feline sibling.
For your resident cat: Adjusting to sharing their space and realizing the new cat isn’t a threat.

3 Months:
For both cats: They’ll likely settle into a routine. With time and patience, they may even become close companions. At the very least, they should be peacefully coexisting.

Introducing Cats: A Step-by-Step Guide

1️⃣ Start with Separate Spaces: Keep the new cat in a separate room at first. Let them adjust to the sounds and smells of the home without direct interaction.

2️⃣ Scent Swapping: Rub a cloth on each cat and place it in the other’s space. This helps them get used to each other’s scent.

3️⃣ Slow Introduction: After a few days, allow the cats to see each other through a cracked door or baby gate. Observe their reactions.

4️⃣ Supervised Meetings: When both seem calm, introduce them in a neutral space. Be ready for some hissing or swatting—this is normal as they establish boundaries.

5️⃣ Give It Time: Adjustments can take weeks or months. Don’t rush the process, and don’t expect them to be best friends immediately.

Remember: A Few Cat Fights Are Normal!
It’s natural for cats to have some disagreements as they figure out their dynamic. This shouldn’t deter you from adopting, but it does mean you need to strengthen your patience. Separate them temporarily if things get intense, and try again later.
